  • Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Robert M. Scharfman is widely recognized for his skill and experience as both a physician and an educator. His areas of expertise include: Cataract Surgery Glaucoma Surgery For Dr. Scharfman, providing excellence in care means treating each patient as an individual with unique needs and expectations. His outstanding surgical skills have helped improve the sight of thousands of patients with vision problems and eye diseases. An advocate of eye care education, Dr. Scharfman truly believes that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. The Old Bridge physician is one of only a handful of volunteer eye doctors in Central New Jersey who participates in The Eye Care America Project, a national eye care project whose goal is to ensure that every elderly American has access to medical eye care. In addition, Dr. Scharfman provides free eye disease screenings throughout the community where he also lectures on topics such as workplace safety, cataracts, glaucoma, eye safety, and diabetic eye diseases. When not treating patients, he also writes a column for local newspapers in the Old Bridge/East Brunswick area, and has been featured on numerous radio and television programs, including News 12 New Jersey, Comcast Newsmakers, and WCTC/WMGQ Radio. Dr. Scharfman is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, where he received his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering. He was then awarded a scholarship to the New York Medical College where he was named a New York Medical College Scholar and received the Cor Et Manus Award. Dr. Scharfman performed his advanced residency training in Ophthalmology at the New York Medical College, and was named Chief Resident in the Department of Ophthalmology at Westchester County Medical Center. Currently, Dr. Scharfman is the director of the Department of Ophthalmology at Raritan Bay Medical Center. He also is a volunteer Clinical Instructor at the University of Medicine and Dentistry, New Brunswick, NJ. Dr. Scharfman is a member of the Board of Governors of the New Jersey Academy of Ophthalmology, was well as a past President. Dr. Scharfman is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
