• The R. E. Smith Co. had its humble beginnings in the late 60's in the garage of Williamsport resident Kermit Smith, where he repaired grills as a hobby-turned-business. Seeing the need for a parts outlet for the new gas grill industry, Kermit's company was the service source for north central Pennsylvania. Looking ahead to retirement, Kermit sold his little business to Dan and Linell Stabler in 1989 with the prediction that alternative home heating would soon sweep the country. He was right. The company has come a long way since then. In 20 years, his little parts business has grown into the area's premier decorative heating retailer.
