  My teacher, Kaneko Sensei, was presenting a workshop on 5-Element application of Shiatsu-Anma. One of my students, accustomed to another TCM theoretical model stressing Eight Principles and Zang-Fu theory became frustrated with an apparent contradiction. Kaneko replied to her rather inflammatory question with a smile and this phrase: "There are many paths up the mountain."
  
  His smile and calm retort has stayed with me for many years. It summarizes a flexibility of mind and practical approach to life and medicine that is embodied in the Taoist principles underlying much of East Asian culture.
